Eagle-boneshaker, United States, 1869

This American boneshaker or vélocipède from 1869 has striking decorations. Although in the United States, the bald eagle is the national symbol, an eagle with a crown was chosen here. The brackets at the front are also very conspicuous because they are made of copper and are strikingly curved. Such brackets were called 'the moustache'. When going downhill, the lower legs were placed on them. When going downhill, the lower legs were placed on these, so that the pedals - which had no freewheel - would hit the legs.
