Locomotion Carriage W. Sawyer, from England, 1850

Fear of loss of physical contact with the ground.

The mechanically driven bicycle probably originates from around 1840, more than twenty years after the walking bike made its first appearance. This is partly caused by the prevailing aversion from loss of bodily contact with the ground. Women are not allowed to ride a bicycle in these days either, as it will cause the point of the shoe to be shown, which is considered indecent. In Paris, women riding a bicycle soon become known as ladies of easy virtue for this reason. The bicycle looks somewhat like a coach. The bar on this bicycle serves a double function.
