High ‘bi’ with 60”(almost 160 cm) front wheel, from England, 1880

Losing your balance.

Around 1870, the search for more speed and balance results in the high bi. Mounting the bike goes as follows: you make speed by scootering and if you have picked up enough speed, you jump onto the saddle. However, balancing is complicated and the slightest obstacle on your way causes you to fall over. Descending from a hill is next to impossible as well. This does not make the bike very popular, and the high bi is especially in demand as a sports article for boys from the elite, who found the Dutch Touring Club ANWB in 1883 and try to enforce the construction of paved cycle tracks.
